What each platform enforces

Published policy in one column. What their upload pipeline actually does to your file in the other. These are not the same thing.

Etsy

Removal risk

Policy

Creativity Standards require every listing to declare who designed and who made the item, and AI involvement in the design has to be disclosed. Enforcement is by removal, and appeals are slow.

Pipeline

Re-encodes uploads and generates its own derivatives. Embedded metadata on the derivative served to buyers is unreliable.

What counts here: The written line and the Designed by attribute

Shopify

Your liability

Policy

No platform-level AI disclosure rule. You are the merchant of record, so your exposure is consumer-protection law in every market you ship to, plus the AI Act if you sell into the EU.

Pipeline

Serves resized derivatives through its CDN. Metadata on the original is usually preserved in storage but not in what a buyer downloads.

What counts here: The written line, alt text, and a product metafield

eBay

Removal risk

Policy

The governing rule is that the listing image must represent the actual item. A generated hero shot of a physical product is an item-not-as-described case waiting to be opened, regardless of any AI policy.

Pipeline

Re-encodes and strips most metadata.

What counts here: At least one real photograph of the actual item

Meta

Reads your marking

Policy

Reads IPTC and C2PA signals on upload and applies its own AI label. There is also a manual toggle in the composer.

Pipeline

Strips metadata from what it serves, but reads it first. Marking the file changes what Meta says about your post.

What counts here: The metadata, and the composer toggle as well

LinkedIn

Reads your marking

Policy

Displays C2PA Content Credentials on images that carry them, surfaced through the post's menu.

Pipeline

Preserves the C2PA manifest where present. Other metadata is stripped.

What counts here: C2PA signing, if you want the credential shown

The pattern across all five: the platforms with the harshest enforcement are the ones that read your metadata least. Etsy will remove a listing over an undisclosed generated image and has no mechanism to read the marking you embedded. The written line is doing all the work there. Do not let a tool — this one included — convince you that marking the file is enough.

Testing your own platform

Policies change and pipelines change more often. Rather than trusting this page, run the check yourself. It takes five minutes and the answer is specific to how your shop is configured:

  1. 1Mark a test image with the free labeler and keep the file.
  2. 2Upload it to a draft listing on your platform.
  3. 3Open the live listing, right-click the image, save it.
  4. 4Run exiftool -G1 -a on the file you just saved.

If DigitalSourceType comes back, the marking survived and buyers get a file that carries its own disclosure. If it does not, the marking still exists on the master you hold — which is what you produce if anyone asks what you published — but the listing text is the only thing a buyer will ever see. Write it properly.

The labeler is on the front page and does not need an account.
